Bruce's Baked Beans

Now that the weather is getting warmer, I thought I would share a favorite family recipe that is great for picnics, grilling out, or potlucks.  We call it Bruce’s Baked Beans because my uncle Bruce introduced this recipe to us on family vacation and it was an instant hit!  This recipe is super easy to make and tastes much better than ordinary baked beans from a can.
You will need:
  • 1lb. ground beef
  • 3 cans of pork and beans (I did one big can that was about the same as 3 small cans)
  • 1 can of northern beans
  • 1 can of chili beans
  • ½ cup of honey
  • 1 cup of brown sugar
  • ½ cup of ketchup
  • 2 tbsp. of mustard
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 bell pepper
First you will need to dice up the onion and bell pepper.  Put the diced onion and bell pepper in a pan and sauté them until the onions become translucent.  Add the ground beef and cook until there is no pink left.  (If you look at my pictures, you might notice I changed pans…save yourself some cleanup and make sure your pan is big enough to fit all of the ingredients in the end)  Drain off the grease if there is any.
Next you will add all the remaining ingredients and heat it through.  Transfer the beans to a 9”x13” pan (you can use a foil pan if you are taking it to a party) and bake it for an hour in the oven at 350°.

This dish makes me very excited for summer parties and warmer weather!
